Do you find your breathing pattern goes out of the window when you’re racing, swimming faster or in open water or you swallow water?

Learning how to breathe isn't something we would necessarily think we would need to improve for swimming.

However, all too often we see swimmers and clients either:

• Breathing too late • Being unbalanced when breathing • Still breathing out when their face is out of the water • Taking a very short breath out underwater • Swallowing water

Late breathing can cause over rotation, shoulder and head rolling, 2 goggle eye breathing and swallowing water. It will also cause a build up of co2 and lactic acid effectively slowing you down fast!

Did you know that...

You should start exhaling using a bubble bubble breathe method as soon as your head / face places back into the water. Try to exhale fully using your diaphragm which will create a vacuum in your lungs when you go to breathe back in, and ensure you are breathing in by the time your arm passes your shoulder! This is key.

Breathe every 2 strokes if you feel short of breath or racing, fully exhale underwater, and rotate your body to 45 degrees each side.
